Kay Chi and Sharlese’s Icedancer EP arrives with a kind of emotional precision that feels seasonal but not superficial. There’s a coldness in its palette, but it’s purposeful—used as tension rather than aesthetic decoration.
The title track is the clear center of gravity. “Icedancer” builds around a firm rhythmic spine of charging claps and rolling toms, while its central hook cuts through with immediate clarity. It draws from neo-Italo’s melodic lineage without becoming trapped in it. Instead of nostalgia, it offers continuity. The production remains lean, prioritising propulsion over density.
Freudenthal and Saeuer’s remix injects kinetic warmth. Their piano-driven interpretation reframes the track entirely, leaning into 90s house vocabulary while retaining enough ambiguity to avoid predictability. The groove breathes differently here—looser, brighter, more extroverted.
“Makes Me Feel Special” closes the EP in darker territory, its synth lines evoking late-night introspection and analog unease. It’s a subtle but effective ending, reinforcing the EP’s emotional range without overstating its intent.
